How it's calculated

Moon phases repeat every 29.53 days (the synodic month), so any date's phase can be computed from a known new moon. From your birth date the cycle position maps to one of eight phases: New Moon, Waxing Crescent, First Quarter, Waxing Gibbous, Full Moon, Waning Gibbous, Last Quarter, Waning Crescent.
